RESUMO

INTRODUCTION: The overall prevalence of HIV associated oral lesions among adults has decreased since the advent of highly active anti-retroviral therapy (HAART). AIMS AND OBJECTIVES: This study describes the prevalence and types of oral mucosal lesions in adults, who accepted a dedicated oral and dental programme for HIV-infected patients. The incidence of oral lesions and the CD4 cell counts on those patients, were related to cases receiving HAART and to those who were not. DESIGN: This was a retrospective, descriptive cross-sectional study. METHODS: Patients were interviewed, using a structured questionnaire to obtain information regarding medical history, current medications and demographic details. Data relating to CD4 cell counts were extracted from clinical medical records of the patent. In each case, the oral cavity of the sitting patient was examined under artificial light, by a clinician using a mouth mirror. Oral lesions were categorised in accordance with EC-Clearinghouse diagnostic criteria. RESULTS: The prevalence of HIV-associated oral lesions was significantly reduced (p < 0.001) in patients receiving HAART. There was, however, no significant difference (p = 0.29) in mean CD4 counts between patients receiving HAART and those not receiving HAART. The presence of oral lesions was statistically significantly, associated with both CD4 counts of < 200 cells/mm3 (p < 0.001) and the absence of HAART (p = 0.033). CONCLUSIONS: The study confirmed that the incidence of oral lesions and of pseudo-membranous candidiasis in particular, were statistically significantly reduced in patients receiving HAART.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: To review the etiology and pathogenesis of anterior open bite malocclusion. DATA SOURCE: Review of literature was affected through Pubmed, Google scholar and Science direct. References identified from articles found from the primary search were also reviewed. STUDY SELECTION: Published data on etiology and pathogenesis of anterior open bite over the last five decades (1960-2009) were utilised. DATA EXTRACTION: Full articles, abstracts and relevant book chapters were read and analysed to determine the relevant material for this article. DATA ANALYSIS: All relevant articles were reviewed in full and necessary information eextracted as necessary. CONCLUSION: A clear understanding of the etiology and pathogenesis of anterior open bite is essential in the diagnosis, prevention and management of this malocclusion.

RESUMO

INTRODUCTION: Early Childhood Caries (ECC) can be defined as dental caries in preschool children. There is a lack of data on the prevalence of ECC at a global, national, regional and district level. Hence the severity and extent of the disease is unknown. OBJECTIVES: The purpose of the study was to establish the prevalence of ECC among 3- to 5-year-old children from the Philadelphia district in Mpumalanga. METHODS: A cross sectional study was conducted on 269 children aged between 3 and 5 years. The caries status was determined using the decayed, missing and filled teeth (dmft) index as described by WHO 1997. RESULTS The percentage caries free individuals were 74.6%, 44.2% and 46.6% and the dmft values were 0.93, 2.69 and 2.18 for 3-, 4- and 5-year-olds respectively. The mean mt and ft values for 3- and 4-year-olds was zero. Among the 5-year-olds, the mean mt and ft values was 0.01 and 0.02 respectively. CONCLUSION: For a rural community the prevalence of ECC is high. Virtually all caries in preschool children from this community is left untreated. There is a need for a properly planned preventive strategy for this community.

RESUMO

Part of the assertion that any survey researcher can make about the validity of their results needs to contain an analysis of questions and their responses from the respondent's viewpoint. Claims concerning the validity, reliability and sensitivity of health-related quality of life measures tend to be based on the quantitative approach of psychometrics, which fails to identify when respondents: misinterpret questions; do not recall the information requested; or give answers that present themselves in a better or worse light. The paper presents some approaches to pre-testing and piloting survey questionnaires to check the interpretation of survey questions, using illustrations from the KENQOL project. The paper describes: how the intended referential and connotative meaning of each question was established; the criteria to judge the appropriateness of each question; the methods used to make those judgements; and the process of reviewing questions based on findings. The role of piloting is highlighted, and further reading is suggested for readers wishing to develop a model for their own investigation.
